Found a snap ring at John Deere. Assembled spool valve with float. First attempt at fix is a total failure. Boom does not operate at all now. Must have screwed up o-ring sequence someplace.

Discovered one too many o-rings on spool and now she operates great. Even retained float. Way better to have spent $4.89 for John Deere rings than the $700 for a new control valve housing especially that a $1.00 wire snap ring less than the size of a 1/4" failed. So even though John Deere stated that this item was no longer supported and non serviceable anyway , I had a smart parts clerk cross reference the ring and he found the loader spool for a 318 John Deere garden tractor had a similar wire snap ring. With some coercion and a bit of filing it went on and held the return centering spring steadfast and now the loader operates better than it originally did. I don't know about anyone else but when my tractor is down, my world is just not right. Thanks all who contributed.

Glad you are back in operation, and told us what you did to fix the problem with out any great expense.
