I have a chance to buy a JD 660 tiller that I want to use on my Kubota B7800.

John Deere #660 three point hitch mount, pto driven rototiller for 35-60 hp tractors. Featuring 60" cutting width with 8" cutting depth, skid shoe depth control and adjustable slip clutch. Used but in good workable condition. Comes with the following new spare parts: set of 36 cutter tines (18r and 18l), skid shoes, drive chain and cover, chain sprocket. $750.00

From what I have seen, this seems to be a fair price with all the new parts, assuming it really is in good workable condition. I have a question, though.

Will this be too much tiller for my B7800 (30 hp, IIRC)?

I need to till and re-seed a small horse pasture, under 1/2 acre. I plan to first rip it up with the rippers on my boxblade, then make two or three passes with the tiller at slow speed, starting shallow and going progressively deeper on each pass.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

That sounds like a good deal especially with the new tines included. Those can be pricey. That said the fact that it needs new tines means it was used a good bit. It could be a good functional tiller for years to come though. I think the B7800 should be able to handle that fine.

I have a JD 660 that I used on my L4200 and now on my L5040. It was a pretty good lug on the engine on the L4200 when I was going deep in clay. I think you'll be fine if you start shallow and lap but as far as tilling a 60 wide 8 inch deep you'll have to go very slow and not over-heat the tractor. They are good tillers. 650 pounds of fine German steel. That sounds like a good price also.

Good price if the drive train is ok. Ken Sweet

Thanks for the replies, guys!

Looked at the tiller today. I don't really understand why he has all the spare parts, the parts on it do not need replacing. The tines and skid plates have very little wear on them, compared to the new parts. The gearbox is tight, no slop or noise. Same with the chain drive. The ony real complaint, besides normal dings and scratches, is the installed chain cover. Looks like it was never painted, and has light surface rust. Seems solid, though. I think I can clean off the rust, paint it, and it will look new.

Needless to say, I bought it. :D The pasture was irrigated a few days ago, should be dry enough to start working it up in a couple more days. Can't wait to give it a try.

Congratulations, some before and after pictures would be good. Ken Sweet

Do the tines say "Made in France" on them? If so would you consider selling them? My 660 might be due for some new tines in a couple of years.

I was thinking the same thing :D

The reason the chain guard is not painted is because it was replaced with a service part. They do not come painted from the manufacturer as they are resold by the tractor's manufacturer, in this case Deere.

You won't have an issue with your tractor as I run mine with a lower horsepower unit. But it is overkill for 1/2 ac.

The spare cover is painted JD Green and has a JD logo decal on it. Must have been painted by the JD parts system (so they can charge extra for it). ;)

I'm not sure where the extra tines were made, but they are not for sale. I suspect the caliche I have to deal with may kill the old ones before too long. If the small pasture works out good, I have another 1.5 acres in the big pasture to do.

Sorry!

Congrats to your new tiller. As Ken mentioned pictures are always welcomed.
