Hello all! I have a JD 655 compact. it is the 4x4 diesel. I inherited it a little over a year ago. It has around 1000hrs I believe. It has no power? When ever you put it under the least little load it tries to die and belches black smoke. When I first got it the air filter was very dirty. I replaced that, the fuel filter and changed the oil. It now starts up pretty good and idles smoothly. I have checke to be sure the intake tract is all clear. I assume I have a fuel problem but do not know how or what to check from here. Any help/ideas would be apreciated. Thanks

Might get some "snake oil" and chemically clean the injectors.....in the engine. Black smoke is unburned fuel and when the governor opens the fuel spiggot in the pump, rather than a mist it comes out in droplets and can't explode. I use Power Service Products. Also Sea Foam works. Keep it in my fuel and never have any problems with pumps or injectors.

Check your air intake tube to see if it is restricted or collapsing under load. Black smoke indicates excess fuel and not enough air.

Thanks guys. I have checked the intake tube. all is clear. I will get some additive for the fuel. It looks like AGRI POWER is the one I should use?

Agree with all above. That model may also have a water/fuel seperator on it If so change the filter in that. Firm believer in Seafoam and Power Service.

Can you run it up to pto speed with no load?
Will it stay there with no problem?

yes it will run up to pto speed. it will run there ok until put under load. it will also power the belly mower ok but will load up if I come to an incline or go too fast.

Does it have solid lifters or a hydraulic valve train?
My guess would be solid, check the valve adjustments perhaps they haven't been attended to and are too tight.

Is the exhaust port or system plugged with soot?
The old decarboning trick with a mist of water sprayed direct into the intake manifold while the engine is a fast idle maybe a consideration. Spray a heavy enough mist to make the engine "labour".

not sure about the valve train? I'm sure it hasnt been adjusted though. Looks like I've got a few things to try. I will dig into it the next decent day that I have off! Thanks !!
