JD 650,750 parts availability

I have been working on a 1985 JD 650 compact that had been pretty abused most of it's life. It being a close relative of the Yanmar YM187D most parts will interchange, at least seals & bearings on the mfwd front ends. (Mine is mfwd) Hoye tractor parts, in Iowa Park, Tx. Has been a reliable and reasonably priced solution to my parts dilemma. I had to rebuild the front axle, most of the drive towers' bearings were destroyed! Seals were bad, too. What has been somewhat lacking is a working data base of crossover parts reference materials and info. Sam at Hoye tractor was extremely helpful, but has since retired, so I want to pass on what info I have in case others who these John Deere Orphans might have a better chance of reclaiming these small jewels!

P.S. She is up & running, ready for fall ground prep!

I got my 650 about 14 months ago,,,

Luckily,,, the only things I have needed are oil, filters, grease,,,, and a seat!!

Nice to see one in such good shape! I kept mine in it's working clothes for now, only new paint on it is what I have fixed ( which is a lot!) last thing it needs for now is tires, the most expensive parts yet.

I could never have tackled this project without it. May not look like too much but the ground is really hard clay and next to impossible to dig by hand. There is a gas meter and gas line that was in the way so in that area I had to dig by hand and it wasn't easy. The wall was leaking in the basement after it would rain so I figured I would dig down to the clay tile and pulled out the ones that were full of dirt and blocked. Never found any that weren't full of dirt so I kept digging and then came to the clean out that was buried 4 feet down that I didn't know was there. Ran a hose down it to see if water would come out into the trench I dug or would go the other way. Figured if it didn't come out into the trench I could stop digging. When I saw that the water was going down the drain away from the trench I rented a hydro-jet and then spent the weekend hydro-jetting out the dirt in the drain tiles. Replaced the clay tile with PVC and put sock over it to keep the dirt out. Filled the trench back up with P-Gravel all the way to the top, 6 yards of it. Wall doesn't leak anymore and we got a lot of rain after I finished this.

Digging in a clay environment is never fun. Out here in Cali the soil mostly consists of a hard clay that you can make Adobe brick from, provided you have the strength to dig it up...

A few years back I rebuilt a 1985 JD 950 4wd and had similar problems. Gears for the front axle, and transmission gears were the big problems for me. Although JD did have some old parts in stock, Hoye in Texas and Fredricks ended up being the life savers finding my needed parts. Some of the gears were very expensive, but in the end when I sold it, I still made very good money on it. Today Hoye supports the gray market tractors much better than John Deere does it's older models. Hoye also supports older John Deere tractors better than John Deere in some cases. Both are Yanmar built. I got a newer series JD970 just because of the parts support issues, and soon, I fear that support for these will get harder as well. All are, and were very good tractors in their time, but it's just a matter of time until you are going to need that part that isn't available anywhere outside a tractor salvage yard.

When I bought mine, the front driveline was missing or stolen, but I figured with the great support for my JD models BN and HN that support for these orphans would be as good. What an eye-opener! I got lucky and found a driveline in Albany New York, and for a good price too! With the persistent application of money, you can make anything work......
