I purchased a jd 5525 with 650 hrs and want to check/change the front wheel hub oil. the manual seems to say use HY-GARD oil, but that seems to be the same oil to use in the hydraulic system. Is this correct? I would think the front hubs take something more like a 90-120w gear oil.

Yes, that's what is called for in my JD 66415 too. Might be the low speeds it sees does not build up the heat a truck axle would

Hygard is the correct oil per the owners manual. Some models do use 80/90 or 85/140 gear oil. I have sometimes found the factory fill oil is not the same as manual recommendation. In my opinion, either one will work. I actually prefer the heavier gear oil in the hubs also. If you do alot of high speed driving on the road, I would stick with the Hygard.
