Gentlemen, I have broken the input shaft to the gearbox after the chain sprocket (coupler). The shaft comes from center gearbox to the outer gear box that is connected to the blades. It is the smaller shaft that go into the gearbox. Can I weld it or should I replace the whole unit. The JD dealer mentioned that they changed the design to eliminate the breaking. Please help, any idea would be appreciated!

I think you will be wasting time and welding rod to weld the shaft. I'd recommend replacement of the shaft. Have you checked the slip-clutch to be sure it's not frozen?? I'm curious how does the model 542 FEL enter into the title of this thread?

Thanks for posting. There has been a lot of MX 6 gearbox failures, now an MX 10. If it looks like it can be welded, I would try that, much cheaper than a new gear box.
