JD 535 Baler on a 5095M

Just bought a JD 535 baler (makes a 5X6 bale). Would a 5095M handle this baler? Also any comments/suggestions for operating this baler? Are there any issues with this baler that I should be aware of?

Yep... probably in 5th gear! Your biggest concern will be SLOW down!

JD's website for a 568 rd baler which is close to the same as a 535 states Minimum PTO, hp (kW) 75 (56) so your 80 pto tractor should handle it but not run away with it.

I just wrapped my first bales of the year last night with my 535. I'm using the 5105M, so it's just a bit more power than the 5095M. Both will handle the baler just fine. I baled 500 bales last season with a 2755 (75hp) and it worked well.
I initially had problems starting the core last season and regularly was plugging. I called my local Deere dealer and he recommended removing all but three of the compression rods. I did that and never plugged it again. The baler wants hay to start the process, easing into the windrow caused more problems. I keep my bales at the 5x5 size (1100-1200 lbs). The bale trac monitor is nice. Take your time reading through the operator manual and during your first few bales.

4 other things can cause bale starting problems. Belts worn too much with little aggressiveness,pickup teeth missing,worn edge on rectangular bars on metal starter roll or pickup belt slipping.

erervin....Thanks for the reply. What gear do you run in when baling? Do you have the 16/16 or the 32/16? I have been waivering back and forth about the 32/16 tranny. Seems like it would be awfully handy in baling hay. Do you use the 540E or the regular PTO?

Tx Jim, thanks for the additional information on possible problems with starting a bale. I have new belts on, pickup chain is not slipping, and all the teeth are there. The bars on the starter roll are however rounded off and worn considerably. I encountered problems again tonight starting a bale. Tends to happen when the hay is dry, short and slick. I heard that welding a bead on the leading edge of those bars will help with the "traction". What would you recommend besides replacing the roll itself?

MWRR, I have the 32/16 transmission. I run in B range, 2nd gear. Start a bale in Low and once it's started shift to the high side running about 4.2 mph. I bought the 32/16 specifically for baling hay with the ability to shift on the go. I use the 540E running my John Deere 275 disk mower, but run regular 540 baling hay.

I was a bit... tongue-in-cheek with the 5th gear comment. :laughing:

A good friend bales with a 535 and uses a 3020 and 2640 on and off; depending upon if he wants to bale up some small squares at the same time.

Not a problem with either tractor.

Of course, much depends on the type of hay and the moisture content of the hay. Eight percent H20 and wild prairie hay... you likely could run in 5th gear.

13 percent alfalfa is another story, though.

Yes one can weld on the leading edge of the rectangular bars. I supervised welding several of them when I was a JD service manager & service center manager. Since I went into custom hay baling business over 20+ yrs ago and 125,000 + rd bales later I've welded on every JD rd starter roll I've owned even the ones with the new style roller(round contoured rods). Sandy soil here eats at the starter roll aggressiveness. I've also gone to putting a 14" long bead(same length as the 2 outside belts) on each side in between the bars/rods. In grass hay such as Coastal Bermuda a more aggressive starter roll helps control hay from running up the frt belts and lodging.
