I used the tractor this morning without any problems. Started right up and ran fine. I pulled it into the shed to change the oil air and fuel filters. Finshed up and it wouldn't crank. This is a 2003 with 400 hours. The only other things I remember touching were I sprayed Fluid Film on the battery connections and used compressed air to clean off the fuel filter before changing it.

When I turn the key to run sometimes the oil and electical warning lights come on brightly and sometimes they come on dimly and get brighter. When I turn the key to start they turn off with a click.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Greg

Check your battery connections. Dim, bright lights... Sounds like a loose and/or dirty connection.

Pull them off the battery, clean 'em good, seal 'em with battery protective coating and tighten them.

The Fluid Film is a very good product and will protect from corrosion, but if it seeped between the battery terminal and the cable, it is actually non-conductive and may be causing the problem. As stated in the previous post, clean the battery terminal and the inside of the cable connector, clamp it down and then "lightly" spray the connection with fluid film. Think your problem will be solve.

Thanks for the reply.
That was the first thing I tried, but there was no change. I'm going to swap batteries with another tractor to see what that does.

Well I was able to reach it with a pair of jumper cables and it started. I cleaned up the battery cables again, using Windex to clean Fluid Film and grease off, and then shined them up with emery paper. Still very low juice and no starting. I'll take the battery in for testing and probably will need to get a new one. It seems like four years is a pretty short life for a battery.
Thanks for your help.

Well, I'm glad to hear that it's not unusual. The thing that concerns me is the coincidence that the battery appears to have failed at the same time that I peformed the service. It wasn't weak at all before. Is this normal battery failure?

You never know when a battery will quit on you. Look at it another way, at least you were not way out in a pasture when it quit. JC

Four years and the battery has pretty much lived it's life, especially for a diesel.

I took it in and it tested bad. I upgraded from the OEM 700 cca to 925 cca for $150.00.
Thanks for the replies.
