JD 5205 or JD 5220

What are the major differences between these 2 tractors?

They both have 53 pto hp and have 4wd as an option.

How do they compare to a Mahindra 5500 4WD?

In simple terms, the 5205 is your basic utilitarian tractor for those on a tight budget. Options are few. The 5220 has a few extra options, especially tranny and hydraulic options. You may want to review the specs for both these models at John Deere's website. I had at one time considered the 5220. It's a real nice machine but it's an ag tractor and built for ag use more so than compact utility use.

Check your pto HP again. I think you are looking at engine hp. I know the 5220 45hp pto, and I think the 5205 is 48hp pto. Like Rancar said the twenty series has more features, possible cab or flat floor open station, draft control, different transmissions.

Let us know what you decide. I hope in six months to a year I can buy one. Have you heard anything on the tier II epa emissions? Those go into effect 1/1/04. Wonder what that will do to the engine electronics or cost of the tractor.

I just got a price on a 5205 w/MFWD and 521 loader for 26K. Does that sound about right? Also looked at a 4710 but didn't get a price on it. The 5205 has 48 PTO hp and the 4710 has 40 PTO hp. I like the larger Utility tractor but it is not as nice as the 4xxx series as far as goodies go...Would like a 5420 even more, but those are touching 30K or so...
