JD 4700 HST whining and low power

I am considering buying a JD4700 with 1800 hours. I have had a few HST tractors that feel ike they are straining under load. this tractor whines and shutters more then others I am used to. It seems way under power for a 48 HP tractor. The pto power is fine ( I run a pto driven chipper with it). Hills and the york rake really seem to strain it. Is it possible that the fluid is bad? Would a dirty filter cause these symptoms. The tractor is in excellent condition otherwise (It was used on a golf course and appears to be maintained well) Thanks

My 4400 HST acted like that when it was warmed up. I dropped the sump strainer and it was covered with a gray slime. Cleaned it, changed the pressure filter and fluid and all is well over 100 hrs later.

Yes, a dirty filter and/or a clogged suction screen will cause those problems. What range (H-M-L) where you operating in?

It happens in all ranges, but obviously the most inhigh gear. It will whine and shutter in low going up a steep grade without any attachments. Where is the strainer that you mentioned?

Strainer location should show up in the manual. Low and on the front side of the tranny.

If well maintained at the golf course, there should be some record of when it was changed out last.

Is this your first HST tractor?

You say you are considering buying yet you say you are already operating the tractor...chipper, etc. Is it on loan?

Yes my stainer had the gray slimy, might be moisture with dirt. Changed out and goes good. The screen is very low rt side bottom center. The bigger hydraulic filter is LVA10419, I have seen confusion about that filter, this is the larger of the two. Use low viscosity hy gard.
