JD 46 Backhoe

After confirming here that the 46 BH actually does exist, I went to my local dealer to check it out. Looks like a decent unit and a more manageable size than the Woods 6500 I currently own. That Woods is just too much for my 4100 and the on/off procedure can be time consuming. Anyhow, the bottom line is $6000. Any feedback would be appreciated!

The dealer should be able to go lower on price for you. Somewhere around 5,000 to 5,600. Good Luck and shop around.

Probably true, but it depends on if the dealer does the install or not. It's a bit of labor and they may absourb this in a package deal, but sold separately it may cost more. Also, you need the tall folding ROPS and Power beyond -- I assume you already have the power beyond if you have a BH already, but I wasn't sure about the tall hoop. I think you have to have a JD FEL too. The attachment uses some of the FEL to attach to.

I've put about 5 hours on my 46 so far and I'm quite pleased, but having not used any other BH, I'm probably not a useful data point.

I am pleased with the 46BH on my 4115. Paid $5400 for it and that included installation. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

$6000.00 is installed and includes the power beyond kit but I'm not sure about the ROPS. My Woods is a 3PH/PTO driven unit so I didn't need the power beyond kit until now. By the way, is the different ROPS really vital? My current ROPS serves as a quasi-headrest when I use my Woods BH! I'd also have to re-route all my lights, and my 4100 just clears the garage door as it is. Hmm...

Then it's not really a ROPS (as in Rolll Over Protection), is it?

I don't think the subframe mount the 46 uses is going to be any faster than your Woods. Also, if you have a MMM you can't use it because subframe front brackets interfere with the MMM. Now if you would have gone up to a 42XX then you get the slick easy to attach BH (47 up).

Don't I know it!! When I bought my 4100 in 7/98 though, they were the only 4xxx CUT available at the time. I tested a 4100 and a 855 and went with the newest model.

My main concern is with the weight of the Woods, over 900#. Just too much for a 4100. Hard to maneuver, and hard to attach. Shame cause it's a fine BH, really heavy duty.

What makes you think this?

Actually, the manual for the 46,47,48 is the same manual now. The section of the manual that shows removal is the same for all the hoes and uses the 46 as the example in the pictures. I can't imagine how the 47 would be easier to remove and attach. The instructions are the same!

What makes me think think this is the fact that the 4100 with a 46 BH I physically looked at and sat on had a large one piece subframe that is connected to the BH. The 4200 with the 47 BH I looked at and sat on had the quick attach system that uses the rockshaft to hook up the BH. The 46 BH does not come with the quick attach system, at least I have never seen one or had a dealer say it is available for the 4100. So I based what I stated by what I have seen.
