How do you change the light switch on a jd 45e tractor.

If it is a cab tractor, the cowl is held on with clips that just snap apart. Pull straight out on sides near windshield to pop clips loose. Then pull back towards the seat to unseat other clips. If open station, there are like 6 or 8 bolts to remove. Raise hood to access some of them. The knob first pulls off, then there is a nut under the knob to replace.
