My 4520 (with 64 hours) is at the dealer for warranty repairs of (1. fuel guage inconsistent readings and (2. high-pitched squeal emanating from just forward of the engine firewall. This squeal occurs when the FEL bucket is loaded and driving/turning manuevers are performed. According to the dealer, Deere is aware of these anomalies and is working on a solution---one of which is to stuff foam around some hydraulic lines to mute the squeal. Seems like a Mickey Mouse fix to me, and is completely unacceptable. Hope I'm wrong about the dealer's explanation.

I don't know about the high pitched squeal but I doubt very seriously that you'll ever get the fuel gage problem fixed.

4720 here
Exact same thing
about 90 hrs on it

Fuel guage and odd squeal from same area it sounds like.

Although I havn't taken it for service, I actually just figured it was one of those vibrations that was well - just there.

I've heard lots of problems with fuel guages too so I havn't been really concerned about that either.

Although the fuel guage is really gettin on nerves since it goes to empty sometimes when still 1/2 full...

Dont let them tell you your'es is the only one doing it.

My 4520 has the same squeal also ,and mine only has 5 hrs. Haven't used enough fuel to see if my gauge has the same problem.

did anyone get these problems resolved ?

I havn't picked mine back up, it is in for repairs for these two items.

They think they have it figured all out.
They put a new fuel sender... will just have to test and see how that goes.

The noise they decided was in the steering column, I think they put some foam padding in there to resovle that. Will just have to see if it works out.

I can not pick it up yet as they broke the fuel door in the process of fixing the other items and are waiting for a part for that.

Just wondered how it turned out for you other guys with the same problem.

Tom,

I just bought a 4320 (it's not even delivered yet) and I noticed a slight power steering squeal while test driving it. Is that what you are referring too?

Thanks,

My JD dealer fixed the two problems on my 4520---fuel gauge sender and hydraulic squeal near the steering column. The squeal was fixed according to JD engineering, who recommended wrapping some of the hydraulic lines with foam padding. So far, so good. Haven't used the FEL since the repair (that was when the squeal manifested itself).

Sounds like what I was talking about....

It usually wasn't all that bad,,, but once in a while it was loud enough that I was actually afraid it could cause some hearing damage. I might have been over-reacting but I'm very particular about hearing. My hearing already seems to be suffering and I do all I can to protect it within reason.

They wrapped foam around something inside the column I believe.

The fuel guage they just replaced sender... Guess I'll get to test whether that works or not as it was intermittent anyhow - it may be a while before I"m sure. As soon as the weather gets above freezing most likely,,,,, brrrrrrrrrrrrr

I'm supposed to meet the delivery people on my property about 8:00 A.M.. That would be fine if I could possibly get a good nights sleep plus it's 20 miles from my current house.

I guess it could be worse...I could be getting socks for Christmas!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

update to 4720 status

well I have had it back for almost 2 weeks
they did seem to help the steering column squeal, although not completely alleviate it.....

I havn't had enough seat time to run the fuel low enough to test the fuel sender properly.

I'm going to wait and see if fuel guage is correct so I can have them work on that again IF NEEDED while they work on the squealing again..... Deere is going to have to do a little better on that.....

I am about to purchase a new 4520 w/FEL and finish mower. Have these problems been resolved to your satisfaction? Is there any reason I should not go forward with the purchase?

Thanks.

see if this helps..
Complaint or Symptom:
The fuel gauges fails to operate or reads erratic.

Problem or Situation:
The LVA13530 fuel sending unit does not provide adequate sealing to prevent fuel from entering the resistor. The fuel within the resistor causes corrosion which, results in a failed or erratic sending unit.

Solution:
Order and install an LVA13623 fuel sending unit.

Additional Information:
The LVA13623 fuel sending unit was implemented into production on all units above the following serial numbers. (LV4120H210075) (LV4120P215004) (LV4320H230059) (LV4320P235025) (LV4320E238001) (LV4320F239002) (LV4520H250007) (LV4520P255039) (LV4520E258018) (LV4520F259014) (LV4720H270065)

and for the noise.....
Complaint or Symptom: Hydraulic whining noise coming from the steering valve area.

Problem or Situation: The noise is the natural harmonic frequency of the fluid flowing through the steering control unit.

Solution: Follow to the steps below to dampen the noise of the steering valve hydraulic fluid flowing.

1.Remove side covers by loosening the screws.

2.Pry open steering wheel cover.

3.Install adhesive foam parts to the inside of side covers and the steering wheel cover per the graphics below.

4.Reinstall side covers and steering wheel cover.

My 4520 was repaired under warranty, and the 2 anomalies were corrected exactly as you have described. No more problemo.

My 4320 has the same noise and the fuel gage on these 20 series is junk as we all must be starting to understand.
The noise from the steering column can be eliminated almost completly by squeezing the plastic covers with my hands. So I had intended to unscrew the halfs and place some dense foam inside to keep pressure on the halfs when they are again screwed together. I guess this is the same repair without the adhesive backing.
The fuel gage will stay as is unless I need to go back to the dealer for other more serious issues.
all in all these are no big thing and with the exception of a loose hose clamp causing a coolant drip and a loose hydraulic hose these have been my only issues after 90 hrs.
