JD 4410 vs. JD 4610

We are trying to decide what the best tractor for us is. We want to have an all purpose tractor that is not too bulky to get around the barn that also can mow the pastures a few times during the summer. We have about 15 acres of pasture that is hilly with some slopes that approach a 30% grade. We want a stable tractor with enough power to handle them. We currently have a JD 855 with 54" mower that is insufficient for the job. It was fine where we used to live (which was flat to gently rolling). Cost is a secondary consideration. The 4610 sits a little higher but is wider than the 4410. Any thoughts? We are planning to get R1 tires with calcium and have a FEL or front ballast on when mowing. Other uses are to drag the horse arena, use a drag harrow on the pastures, pull a trailer and manure spreader around, and other similar light duty jobs. No tillage jobs are planned.

Kubota 4300dt. It has the width, the power 45hp, the tph lifting capacity, more then the comparable JD, and a great price. They are std shift but for what you need it for a hydro would be alot extra for nothing. I have a JD 110tlb for loader backhoe work, but my next tractor is a 4300 for mowing, chipping,grading etc.

My 4310 has R1s and is extremely stable. We have the wheels set all the way out. We mow about 50 acres of pasture with a 6' cutter and it does a great job. Obviously if a 4610 will fit, it'll do a great job.

Unless storage is an issue, as it was for me, I'd go with the larger chassis every time. They are both great machines, no loss either way - If FEL work is in the mix, as I believe you said, then the loader on the 4610 will be stronger, but the 430 loader on my 4310 is far from wimpy - to date I've moved in the neighborhood of 200+ tons of fill, stone, and other asst'd rip-rap. The 430 loader has performed real well... just smaller bites. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Have had a 4410 for about a month now, tremendous machine.

Have some pretty serious slopes I mow on and it is unbelievably stable with the tires not loaded.

Working wise it is a very powerful machine. Turn on load match and it powers up big slopes while mowing, and powers through piles of wet top soil. Backhoe strength has been very impressive as well.

I was between a 4410 and a used 4710 I found and have been pretty happy with the 4410 for what I am doing.

When I was making my final decision between mid-and-large chassis I drove a 4610 (hydro) and 4310 (also hydro) back to back several times around my dealers lot. One of the factors I was trying to determine was the relative manuverability. With all of the other equipment parked there was a lot of opportunity for threading between obsticals and 3-point turns, etc., Frankly, while on paper the large frame is a little bigger each way and has a slightly larger turning circle - there didn't seem to be very much difference at all actually sqeezing around between obstructions. For my purposes they seemed interchangable from the manunverability angle. Also - while the large frame is heavier it also has bigger tires so I suspect you'd rarely see much of a difference in ground compression (tire tracks left behind). On the other hand the tread width can be set a lot wider on the large frame JDs than the mid-sized - that might make a positive difference in you sense of pucker-factor on slopes despite sitting a little higher.

I've got the 4600 and use it to get into some pretty tight spaces. For the extra power and if you ever want to get a bigger job done I think the 4610 is a better choice for your setup. If price is an issue I don't think you'd be undersized for what you are talking about doing either. I do know on the 4610 that you will have alot more ways to move your tires exactly where you need them if that stability and then narrowness is an issue.
