jd 440 rear axle housing replacement??

I broke the 3 point ears off my jd 4400 left side...any tips on where to buy a new housing for the best price?? also any tips on this project..i was told to unbolt the axle housing and it will slide right out as a unit...is this correct or is there any hidden tricks to getting it out??

When we had a 4400 we had to replace that housing twice due to broken off ears, it's a real weak spot on those tractors. As I recall, you take off the tire, 3pt linkage, ROPS and fender, then a few little other little things like the brake actuator arm and other little sundry things. Then you unbolt the housing and slide it off. Use a floor jack or something to support it when sliding it off, it's kind of heavy. Then it's just a matter of swapping the axle, gears, etc over to the new housing. I would put a new wheel bearing and seal in while you're at it.
