I found the oil almost in the center of the tractor underneath where the floorboard would be located.

That could be a loose filter or suction screen mount and clamp. But if you have doubts, keep searching.

I spoke to the dealer that has this tractor and he has had it looked at since I pointed the leak out to him. The report is that the leak was coming from a "plate" underneath the tractor and they have had it fixed.

Any ideas what this could mean?

Part #9 maybe?

arabil. you were correct. It was the part that you indicated. They replaced the gasket.

Thanks to everyone for their help and answers!

I am now the owner of a John Deere 4300!!! It is being delivered Friday.

Would the dealer be the best place to get an operators manual or should I buy it online somewhere?

Hmmm. While I like to be correct and all, plate #9 doesn't have a gasket. Did they mean a liquid gasket/sealant? Cause if not, then it couldn't have been what I said.... :)

That plate might be a little warped...necessitating a gasket of some sort.

It had to be sealed to the housing no matter what if it was to hold fluid in. I rarely hear sealant referred to as a gasket is all.

Thanks for the link.

I guess "gasket" may have been my slip. The dealer did say that they used sealant.
