I purchased my JD 4300 HST 4X4 brand new 6 years ago and have never had a problem of any kind whatsoever. This tractor has been a true work horse. The other day I washed this tractor with soap & water and gave it an overall good cleaning inside and out.

I don't know if washing the 4300 has anything to do with this problem or if this is just a coensidence, but since that time I believe that my brakes are sticking. Whenever I shift into high gear and try to go I lose about 300 RPMS as if the brakes are holding the tractor back.

When I climb underneath and tap both brake levers they release and I can go as normal until I apply my brakes again and they stick.

Has anyone had this problem and if so can u enlighten me about a fix???

Thanks,
ArkLaTexSam

Have you greased the parking brake? I don't know if that would have any impact on it or not - I'd be curious to find out what your problem is.

I would spray the brake levers where the shafts go into the housing with penetrating oil. If you keep spraying it and working the levers back and forth, they should free up. Afterwards, lube the shafts with a little oil occasionally to keep them loose.

Thanks for both of your suggestions; I hope it's that simple and I'll give both a try. I've always been able to fix problems with cars, boats, tractors, etc.... but i'm not familiar with the JD brake system at all. It seems there has to be some kind of spring or piston system that released the brakes when u depress the petals that is failing. This also happens if I press down on one or both of the turn brakes. Thanks again for your help!

Check the springs at the bottem of the ROPS,sould be two release springs to the beake rods.I had a 4200 and lost 2 times, sound like the same prob.

There is also a spring under the dash for each pedal

ah. Forgot about the springs. Good point!

Let us know how you resolve the problem, ArkLaTexSam!

Ok, I just spent several hours troubleshooting my brakes, springs, etc... to death and I'm thinking that I may have something else wrong.

When I idle up and take off in 1st gear the tractor takes off and idles back to the same rpm. 2nd gear is about the same and idles just slightly below the set rpm. I believe this is normal. However, when I set my rpm and take off in 3rd the pumps start whining loudly. The rpm drop dramatically as speed increases and the engine whines down to almost stopping as I continue to press down on the pedal. If I slack off the pedal and let the rpm's catch up the same thing happens. If I press down real fast on the pedal in 3rd the tractor will start jumping sometimes.

I'm thinking that water may have leaked into the hydraulic fluid when I washed the tractor. Seems like I read about the hydro plastic caps not sealing correctly, allowing water to get in the fluid.

I wonder what the tractor will do when this happens and if that's my problem. Looks like I'll be changing hydro fluid and filter tomorrow. I hope this is the remedy.

Again, I appreciate all of your suggestions and look forward to hearing anymore ideas.

I’ve found that my brakes are causing the problems. Both springs under the ROPS are missing. I don't think those 2 springs were even on the tractor when I purchased it.

I've also located a loose Bellcrank/Lever on the left side of the rear end which has a tensions spring pin in it that holds it onto the cam. I believe that there is a screw missing from inside the Bellcrank/Lever that secures it in place on the cam. I'm going to check some more with a mirror and try to find out more. The parts charts on JD Parts does not indicate how it's held in place other than the tension pin. I guess it's possible that the tension pin has broke. I'm able to slide the Bellcrank/Lever from side to side and the cam that goes into the rear end slides with it. This also indicates that i may have something broke inside the rear end.
