Hey guys,,,I want to connect a maintainer on my tractor this winter. I have 2 6v bats one on each side, I assume they are in a series (?) for a 12 v system.

So..... do I get a 6v maintainer and just hook it up to one battery (either side) so both bats will be kept up to full charge if not what connections do I make.

Thanks

If I desired to attach a battery maintainer to a JD 4240 I attach positive lead of a 12 volt maintainer to top post on starter solenoid or to positive cable end on LH battery and negative wire from maintainer to tractor frame. Attachment of maintainer would be the same as attaching cables when a "jump start" would be required.

You are dealing with a 12 volt system not a 6 volt .
I agree with Tx Jim as to the top post on starter solenoid and ground .

If you have two six volt batteries in series and a 12V charger you need to connect the charger so it is in series with the two series connected batteries. If you have a six volt charger you can only charge one battery at a time because the series battery connection will not allow you to connect them in parallel unless you disconnect the series hookup first. One wonders, why on earth would Deere do a screwball hookup like this in the first place?

2 6 volt batteries, and the jd 4240 shows on TractorData as a 6v system..

That would mean the batteries are connected in parallel so you'd want to connect a 6V charger across both batteries connected in parallel too. Since the parallel connection is already made via the tractor wiring you'd only need to connect the charger to one battery and it would charge both.

I read Tractor data info for JD 4240 as 2(two) 850 CCA 6 volt batteries but nothing stating it's 6 volt system

Good to find that out.. what Jim found is what I found as well.. a bit misleading but information just the same. Had a PM that suggested there are three models of the 4240 (two that are 12v ), so maybe a voltmeter would help nailing it down by the OP.
