Folks ,

I am at my 50 hr service and while I have the trans fluid drained I thought it would be a good idea to put in a Trans fluid heater. Just like the block heater I installed for the engine , however for the Transmission. After cleaning the suction screen I noticed two magnets in the screen on the bottom. The purpose of course is to collect metal pieces etc. that are floating about. Not much on them all at , but I cleaned the off. The heater goes in place of the hex cap in the middle of the suction screen cover just below the rear PTO which happens to also be in the middle of the suction screen itself. The problem is that after putting the magnets back and attempting to install the heater , the magnets keep getting attracted to the heater and stick to it. Most likely not a good thing if the the it meant to heat the fluid and not the magnet. So I called the local JD dealer and was advised that most of the machines do not come through with these magnets anymore and I could leave them out.

My concern is 2 fold :

1). These magnets server a purpose by gathering any metal from floating around the system

2). If I leave them in they will get attracted to the heater and stick , making me wonder if the heater will breakdown the magnets. Then I have metal floating around the system.

What's the best approach, magnets in or magnets out ???

I have all the parts numbers and prices if anyone is interested in doing this to their 4110

Marko,

It's just one opinion, but I would try to keep the magnets in even if they stick to the heater element. That is, of course, only if the heat will not break them down and if they do not limit heat dissipation and transfer to the fluid. This is a tough question and I would expect JD corporate to be the only reliable source for the answer--nothing against your dealer or mine.

Marko: I just did my fluid change and there were no magnets on the suction screen to the 4300. All of the metal particles were trapped on the screen. Take your best shot but I am not sure you even need the magnets. Good luck.

Here's an idea, for your consideration. Epoxy the magnets in place first. Then they will stay put when the (apparently magnetic) heater element is installed near them.

All ,

Thanks for the suggestions. After sleeping on it I went in the direction that the Service Tech at the dealer suggested. In that he has not seen tractors come through recently that had the magnets still in. He advised NOT putting them back in due to the fact that the current machines do not have them. So after having drained the fluid , installing new filter , the last item was to install the heater and re-filled 3.5 gallons of JD Low Vis Hy Guard fluid.

I also changed the engine oil and filter and re-filled with 2.3 qts of Rotella Synth.

I must say that the machine runs MUCH quieter than before with the Delvac 1400 oil. Glad I switched to Synth. I think I posted the parts / numbers for the Trans heater before however here it is again. The JD website has it as well when you configure any of the 4010 series machines.

Along with the block heater I installed last year , this should help in the cold winters we have been having here in the Northeast.

1 - AR95434 - Cord $14.03
1 - AR94493 - Heater Core - $47.85
1 - R34557 - Clamp $1.71
2 - R44302 - Locking Strap (Wire Tie) .43 cents - Already had some

Marko, my 2004 4110 has them. At my 50 hour service, they were holding metalic "paste" that would not have been held by the fine filter. Just tying to confuse you more. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bigpete ,

My magnets had the same "paste" on them. I feel better after talking to the dealer that they have not seen any machines come through with them. Maybe the factory has stopped putting them in. I personally think it is a good idea to have them just not in a place that would hinder something else , like a heater /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif . I thought about the suggestion that jimgerken made and epoxying them in , however epoxy in in the tranmission attached to the suction screen did not sleep well with me. Not saying that it would not work , just does not seem the way for me to go.
