Good morning all,

We are looking for a tractor and have come up with either the 4105 or the 4005. Both fit our needs well but I have a concern over drive train. One is 4cyl (4005, Yanmar 4TNV88) and the other is a 3cyl (4105, Yanmar 3TNV84T-KJT). I realize output is nearly identical and both should live up to its name but what I want to know is which engine is more popular throughout the JD line-up, both past and present?

I would think a powerplant that has been used previous and has proven itself as reliable would be the better choice overall.

What do you think? Any other tractors you think I should be taking a look at that perhaps I have overlooked?

By the way, wonderful forum with loads of information.

I would consider the engines a minor difference compared to the overall tractors. Really depends on whether you want a gear tractor or hydro tractor. Have you looked at the 4120 through 4720 models?

I am leaning towards gear, so that essentially means the 4005 model. My budget is not allowing for too much more of a tractor and I am afraid the "boss" might start asking questions.

I am not looking for the difference, just the amount an engine us used in other platforms. This can often make parts availability better and possibly cheaper.

I purchased 4105 in April .I am very happy with it
As far as power I run out of traction before loose power
I love way that turbo sounds.

The Yanmar 3 cylinder and 4 cylinder diesel's have been used in JD CUT's since the 70's. They have all proven to be very durable, long-service engines.

Most of the engines have varied only by a handful of cubic inches or the addition of a turbocharger.

That said; it is not likely a realistic "deal changer" to base your decision on the superiority of the Yanmar engine in the 4005 versus the 4105 - IMO. Hp, torque, fuel economy are close enough that for the majority of uses that these tractors have -- it's gonna be a toss up.

And a matter of personal preference...

Yanmar engines have been used in agricultural, industrial and marine applications for decades. They are extremely reliable and fuel frugal engines. Even the engines used in (at least some) of the Deere CUTs are also used in industrial and marine applications.
The 4005 tractor is not a new machine. It's been around for at least 10 years as the 990.
I think you'd find the 4005 to be an excellent choice.

I am just getting back into "newer" tractors and I had no idea is was just a new designator. I suppose that explains why I am not finding much information on the 4005. Once I searched for 990 the information flowed like water!

I am still overseas on business but I get back at the end of next week. My local dealer has a 4005 waiting for me to check out.

Thanks for the information!

I would take a good look at the 4005. A proven tractor that is hardly ever mentioned here at TBN. (that's a good thing.)

4005 is a good tractor, it's one I'm considering too. Let us know what you decide

I sure will. As of now, my order of preference is the JD 4005, Kubota L4400, MF 1643, and the Mahindra 4035.

The JD looks like a solid piece of equipment that is built they way I prefer it, simple. The Kubota is a contender as well, maybe a little more ease of operation than the simple 4005. The MF is just there to go look at but I doubt I will really consider it. Price is high and the dealer is a good bit away from me. The Mahindra is only there because I have spent a lot of time in India and have seen how they do over there. I am not excited about the added weight and lack of parts and service. Worth a couple hours of my time to check out at any rate.

No reason to stress over something fun, right? I have plenty of time and an understanding wife...
