JD 4030 pto issue

hey folks - looking at a 4030 that was along side the road for sale (~6000 hrs). They want $9000 with a monster JD 115 grading blade. I think I could maybe buy it for $7500. Seems to run really well except for that convoluted syncro shift pattern that I had never dealt with before BUT the PTO lever will not stay in the engaged position. The PTO turns when you hold the lever up but will not stay there. Any clues if this is somethingmajor or minor. Doe this sound like a fair deal or not? - steve

That problem can often be fixed from the outside without a lot of expense, but sometimes will require a split depending on the actual cause of the problem. The tractor is probably worth closer to $9K than $7500 if it has decent rear rubber and no other problems.

30-55 series rowcrop tractors with syncro & quad range trans have a history of an arm bending(part # R67981) that a engagement piston hydraulically pushes against to hold pto lever in the "on" position. Can be repaired without splitting simply by R&R of clutch control valve on LH side of tractor. Syncro-range shift pattern isn't bad after one shifts it a few 100 times. All shifts except range changes are synchronized.
