Did some searching on the web this morning and haven't had any luck finding what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd post my question here to see if anyone here can help me out.

Saturday my dad was mowing weeds with his 1973 JD 4030 and his rotary mower when the fan belt broke. He has not owned this tractor (or any tractor really) for long, so we are both relatively inexperienced working on them. Assuming we go to the dealer and get the right replacement belt, is putting the new belt on something doable for a couple inexperienced (though reasonably intelligent) guys? Or should we just call the dealer and have them send someone out to knock it out?

Should only have to loosen the alternator, tilt it up.
Might have to take the fan blade off, but think just 4 cap screws, but only if the fan belt doesn't slip over the blades.
Let us know what you think when you look it over closer.
The belt part no. is R46113

Belt should fit between fan & shroud without loosening/removing fan. You'll have to disconnect frt hyd pump drive coupler by removing clamps(parts key 2) to R&R fan belt which would be an opportune time to change bushings(parts key 4) 4ea-R45822 Bushing - BUSHING 2.43 USD

Flattery will get you nowhere:laughing:

Thanks for compliment. I suppose the 21+ yrs of which over 1/2 the time was in service dept I spent employed at a JD dealership didn't go for naught.

Latest intel from Dad on scene is that the fan belt is okay, it was the a/c belt that broke? If that's the case then are we back to beenthere's suggestion to loosen alternator, return belt to pulleys, tighten alternator and off we go?

The a/c belt is behind the fan belt. You will need to loosen alternator and remove fan belt from pulleys. Then loosen the a/c compressor and tilt it in to have room for new belt. Then as TxJim says, the hydraulic pump coupler needs to come apart to get the belt on. I would recommend replacing the fan belt at the same time since you will have it off anyway.

I agree with jd110 in replacing both AC & fan belt at this time.

What about if there is only one belt? Does it have to be timed right? I have one belt on my 4300 that is hooked up through the engine fan and alternator i think.

I've never seen a fan belt that requires timing.
