olderjd for now
I have a 1985 401D JD industrial model tractor with a leaky seal. The load sensing shaft seal is leaking on one side (common issue evidently). I would just as soon take the shaft out and plug the holes as the three-point is in the way more often than not. Also, I have a new Mahindra 2638 coming soon that has adequate three-point capacity for me.

My question is this: Can I remove the shaft and NOT replace it? I would just plug the holes. I may have to cut the shaft to get it out as it appears that the loader mounts may be in the way.

Thank you for any comment.

JD used plugs when no rockshaft was installed P/N T22653. There are a couple of parts that look like they could come loose after the shaft is removed. You might want to fish them out with a magnet. You will have to drain the hydraulic oil before you remove the shaft

IIRC the parts(keys 18 & 19) should stay attached to arm unless knocked loose when reinserting L/D shaft.

Good morning Tx Jim,
I wasn't going to re-insert the shaft, just plug the holes. And thank you both for taking the time to reply.

Thanks TxJim, I've never been in that deep, and was not sure if the parts would stay attached or if the shaft against them was what held them in place.
