JD 400CX FEL Question

Hi All,

Have a 4520 w/400CX FEL on order. This may be a foolish question, but can anyone advise if there is a "float" position for the FEL and if there is a required procedure to activate? When pushing snow, it would be nice to have loader follow driveway contours.

I'm 100% sure there is. I believe it's actually a function on the hydraulic valve itself as opposed to the loader. On the 4320 you just push the scv (loader control) lever all the way forward (bucket down movement) into a "detent" position and it's in float. The third scv also has a float position I believe. Our 4320 with 400X loader certainly floats and it is handy. You may find bucket is less than an optimal tool for snow though!

The 400x has it. Just raise your bucket a couple of feet off the ground and "quickly" push the boom down and then let off. It should "float" down till the bucket hit the ground. It takes a little getting used to doing it. But, it helps to start with the bucket in the air.

They ALL have it, it's in the valve that comes with the tractor-doesn't matter which loader you get.

To get a better "feel" for the detent position I practiced a few times with the tractor turned off.

Thanks to everyone for their input and suggestions. Its really great to have a site for information on compact utility tractors. As soon as I take delivery (hopefully soon) I will experiment putting this in "float" mode.
