We have a few horses and are thinking of moving to using round hay bales.
I built a feeder based on the Hay Saver design pictured below

This feeder works fantatstic with minimal waste. I used a heavier ga pipe versus the thin wall EMT used by Klene and also built a perimeter plank to keep the loose fines from falling out. We store a bale high and dry all summer with the gates closed. I have pics and prints if interested. It cost a good bit, but well worth it. She used to feed small squares and flake off into a tub. Horse would throw it all over the place and make a mess. Now there's virtually no waste.
The only drawback is very minor and that is the horse may get worn "spots" or patches on the muzzle where contact is made with the bars. All depends on how aggressive the push is to reach the hay.
