I own a JD 3320. When checking the oil I've been told that the loader, backhoe, etc. should be in a position where the hydro pistons aren't exposed, and oil is, essentially, only in the tractor. I would think it should be the opposite - that oil should be checking when the hydraulics are full and the pistons fully exposed. Any assistance here appreciated.

Thanks Much,

John

I would think that it shouldn't make a difference because they are all double acting cylinders (same amount of fluid in cylinder at all times).

Thanks FP. I think the oil position on the dipstick varies with the position - which adds a bit of confusion. I'll be checking it today and will report back later.

Great answer! All the implements should be in a lowered position when checking hydro oil. The level is not super critical, it will always vary a little depending on if the loader and/or backhoe is attached.

Except for the volume occupied by the cylinder rod.

Good point RickB....I didn't think about that.

Thanks for all the responses. I agree. The volume occupied by the cylinder rod is what makes that difference. I was testing this yesterday and that is surely the case. That said, even when the implements are down the oil level drops to the lower end of the range in the dipstick (assuming it was at the high level before).

Thanks again,

John
