So I have a 1971 301 (3cyl gas) with FEL that I purchased a few months ago. Tractor runs pretty good but had a bogging issue and charging issue. I know the previous owner and know that it had been sitting for quite a while so I tuned it all up fixed the charging issue (voltage regulator) and had the carburetor rebuilt..... Again the tractor runs and idles very well except for the higher gears. From gears 1-5/6 it takes off pretty smooth and easy under power. However it 7/8 particularly it just wants to stall. Boggs way down and doesn't want go at all. I would say it gets progressively worse through the gears in general but I can get it moving in all of the others. Any suggestions from some of you experts would be great! After rebuilding the carb and setting the timing I'm not sure what else it could be?

Thanks a lot

Marcel

The way I read this you are stalling in 7-8 from a stand still?

You might consider installing electronic ign in lieu of points/cond.

Yes exactly. It's as if the tractor just doesn't have the power to get up and go on the higher gears. Very strange considering in all of the low speeds it's seems to run alright. I guess I'm also assuming that it runs as it should in those gears. This is the first full size tractor I have owned. But being a relatively heavy 3 cylinder I would have to imagine that in those low gears everything is right.

Does it seem like it's missing? Could be an ignition energy problem where the breakdown voltage is too high at higher air charges/loads. Sounds like you already changed plugs? Might try a coil. Serviced the points recently?

The fuel is new, it had under a gallon when I bought it I put about 13 gallons brand-new gas in it

Did you by chance drain that gallon out? A gallon of bad fuel will ruin the new.

No that I did not do. You think that's what Happened? Bad fuel causing the engine to under perform/ loose power?
