JD 2940 Rearend Noise

I have a JD 2940 that just started making a noise in the rearend. everytime i let off the throttle the and the tractor is slowing down under compression from the engine a terrible knocking sound comes from i think the rearend. has anybody ever had this happen to them? any ideas?

My FIL was trying to get the little bucket scoop to dump by popping the clutch--repeatedly--and his started making a noise like that. He has an H Farmall. I pulled the top cover, and he had broken the bearing retainer on the left axle. Wasn't too bad of a repair job, but he learned a lesson. Hopefully yours is something simple, like maybe a loose wheel. Good luck.

I think I'd jack that sucker up and rotate the axles by hand and see what I felt/heard.. maybee drain the diffy into a strainer and look for metalic particles as well, as a then-prelude to teardown, pending the results of those observations..
