Rear Finish Mower JD 272 Gearbox Repair or Replace?

I have an older JD 272 Grooming mower that appears to be leaking gear lube into the belt area. My mower's gearbox is manufactured by Curtis. I don't believe Curtis replacements are any longer available. I was looking at a 272 listed on eBay that has a gearbox made by Comer in Italy. If replacing the seal on the horizontal shaft of my Curtis is not doable for any reason, would a Comer gearbox be a viable replacement for my old gearbox? And are the Comer gearboxes good?
