JD 2440 PTO won't engage

I just bought a used John Deere 2440. The PTO will not engage when the Tractor is running and an emplement is hooked up. I can shut it off, engage the PTO, start it back up and the emplement works great. If there is no emplement hooked up the PTO will engage while the tractor is running with no problem.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Sounds like the pto clutch is not disengaging.

2440 has two stage clutch-> push the clutch pedal down half way to shift, all the way down to engage PTO. One thing I am sure of, the tractor should not start with the PTO engaged! Safety switch is faulty at least. I would remove the plug on the left side of transmission just ahead of clutch pedal and look in with flash light. See if anything is out of sort. You have a dry clutch, so repair wouldn't be too bad, it would involve splitting tractor. I would replace everything while I was in there: clutch pack, clutch bearing, engine rear main seal and pnion bearing.

It could also have a hydraulicly operated independant PTO clutch, not a two stage foot clutch.
