JD 2210
Hello, I disassembled the tractor yesterday to have access to the drive shaft between the engine and trans. I have a bad ujoint and want to replace both ujoints while I have it appart. My current issue is that I cannot spin the shaft to have access to the snap ring that holds the shaft on crank of the engine. Currently the tractors back tires are up off the ground the transmission is in neutral its in 2wd and the front tires are on the ground. all I want to do is spin the driveshaft. Any ideas?

The 4 wheel drive is engaged by an electric solenoid. Hydraulic pressure disengages the 4 wheel drive with a spring engaging it. So without the engine running the 4 wheel drive is engaged. You need to either start the engine or lift the front wheels off of the ground or remove the front drive shaft. The front drive shaft isn't hard to remove as all you need to do is remove a snap ring and slide the coupler untill the shafts are separated. Lifting the front tires off of the ground would probably be the easiest.

Thank you for the quick reply, ive lifted the front tires off the ground. however I still cannot turn the back wheels and when I turn the front ones it spins the driveshaft between the front axle and rear trans, I'm trying to turn the prop shaft between the engine and trans still am not able too. I also tried removing the driveshaft snap ring like you said but my snap ring pliers just cant grip it right I'm assuming I may have to try reconnecting the ignition switch and fire it up to get it to turn the prop shaft?

Sounds like you're fighting engine compression. I usually use a pry bar or large screw driver in the U joint yoke to turn the shaft

Ya I like the above idea. If you start the engine again chances are that it's going to stop in the same place. If you disable the fuel shut off ( IE unplug it ) then you could use the starter to bump the engine over but it's probably just as simple to use a large screw driver

Totally engine compression.

Remove the left side engine panel. This gives you access to the flywheel. It's toothed so the started can turn the engine. With a large flat blade screwdriver use the teeth to pry against the frame rail turning the engine. Repeat until the shaft is in the position you desire. Hopefully this picture makes sense. The toothed flywheel can be seen in the center of the light.

Understand, the shaft is solidly fastened to the engine. All the gear selection, 4wd/2wd, whatever else you try is within the transaxle. Nothing you do there released the driveshaft from the engine. This machine does not have a clutch at the engine crankshaft end.

Additionally, you need to create a method to grease these joints. It's a bitc*. I cut a square hole in my floorpan to access the rear one from the top. I cut a hole in the right side of my dash tower to access the front one. Not saying my method is best. Just saying, while you are doing this repair develop a method of greasing the joints. I lube mine every 25-30 hours.

Here's also a thread about this task with some very good pointers.

Good thread. Think I need to cut those holes for access to the front U joint on my 2025R.

The front U joint disentegrated on the JD 4010, like the 2025R but with 6 more hp and a few goodies, and somewhat similar to the 2210. Took 660 hours and 9 years. So, at around 110 hours and less than 2 years, I need to do something.
