JD2210
I had only 10 hours on my JD 2210 when the hydrostatic cooling fan broke. I was using the rotary cutter mowing down 1/2 inch diameter sapling when I heard a slapping noise. I stopped the tractor and looked underneath to find the plastic cooling fan shattered by a twig. My dealer says I'm not he only one he has seen this happen too. The dealer said it is not a quick fix, alot of tear down is needed to get the fan off the shaft.... How long has John Deere been making tractors and this happens is very disappointing to me. I quess nobody field tested this new model very good. I emailed John Deere but no kit or fix was given to me. Just that my concern is filed. I wonder how many owners don't even realize there fan is broke since you don't look there to often....

I think I might be improvising some type of shield or guard to protect the new unit if I was in your position.

Some of the older Cubs have a screen wire or hardware cloth screwed to the frame rails under them to prevent things from getting to the fan, etc. Might be a easy fix.. I will be doing that to mine, looks like..Thanks for the info..

I remember getting my tractor and thinking "wow, a go-everywhere machine..." /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Then later I got on my back under the tractor looking up...and thought "Wow, so many linkages, filters and things just hanging out there waiting to be snagged (or worse)...!!!" /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I did make a small skid plate to protect the front drive shaft which has a plastic cover. And eventually I will make some kind of light duty belly pan to protect from sticks and twigs that might want to puncture one of my transmission filters or snag something else important under their.

Laying on the ground looking up at the underside of the tractor is something every new tractor owner should do. Gives one a different perspective on how bullet proof a stock tractor is...

It has a separate cooling fan for the hydrostatic transmission?

Yes, the 2210 has a cooling for the the transmission. Mine has a guard around it.

Excellent point Henro - I've had plenty of experience getting hung up on all sorts of ground debris. I was the same way when I got the 4310 in - A battle tank I thought - I've now learned to keep a watchful eye on what exactly I'm driving over, and to look for anything that could get fouled up in my tractor's underside. Underbody armor would be a big addition for me.

As others have said.. many other tractos have schemes in place to protect their fans.

Even my old ford N series tractor from as far back as 39 had a 2-part wire mesh screen that could be spring clipped to the grill, and then clipped to the bottom underside to prevent debri from flying right up into the fan.. and those were heavy metal " chop yer fingers off " type fans too...

guess that is a Deer pocket-liner issue.

I am still awaiting the arrival of my new 2210 and this has me nervous. The question I have regarding the cooling fan is, will the MMM possibly act as a shield to hopefully prevent breakage?

My Kubota BX has the same problem, and the oil filter is right next to the fan. My oil filter has a couple of dents on it... I will look around to see what I might mount a skid plate to, then dream up how to make one.
