I've got my 2210 apart again giving it a total clean and service (last was 2019 and over 200 hours ago).

While I had the deck off I noticed I had some noticeable movement in the driveshaft when running. I've got all this apart, and the issue is more with the sliding spline fitting into the transmission than the U joints themselves (which felt fine). With a dial indicator on the yoke there is around 2mm lateral movement on the splines. If I don't resolve this, its just going to destroy universals (or something more serious).

Overall, this is a pretty poor design (as has been noted many times!). The problem seems to have originated with the limited depth the yoke splines engage onto the transmission shaft. If this can be modified so the yoke is fully engaged on the transmission shaft, there is absolutely no lateral movement at all. However, for this to happen the driveshaft would need to be around 20mm longer (but this could be limited by the ability of assembling the rear universal in situ. I don't want to end up having to move the motor or transmission to get the shaft in and out as JD suggest...). I have a bit more playing to see exactly how much longer I can get away with.

My options at the moment are to cut the shaft and weld in a splice to extend it, or to replace the rear yoke (or just the splined part of this). Extending the shaft is all doable - have access to everything I need to do this and maintain alignment, and that is probably the direction I am headed.

What would be easiest is if I could just source an alternative rear yoke with a longer splined section. I'm guessing John Deere used some sort of standard transmission and driveshaft components, and there will be other compatible bits out there (other CUT's, ATV's etc), but have had no luck trying to figure out anything that may work. I've taken some Du-Kit molds of the shaft, so I know what I'm dealing with, and have some patterns I could match with alternatives, but need someplace to start. Does anyone have any idea what JD used here, or what might work?

12n series driveline. How many splines is the yoke connection?

15 splines.

Needed the tractor in short order, so have reassembled it all with new uv's, but no driveshaft changes yet.

The only change I've made in readiness for needing more room on the hst shaft, was to pare 4mm off the locating boss for the fan mount. This gives me another 4mm to play with to get a longer driveshaft assembled in situ. I've done a lot of measurements, and looks like an 18mm longer shaft will give me full engagement when it's all assembled, but needs some spare space to assemble the rear UV in situ (ultimately you need some space here in any case to allow the splined yoke to move axially - I can't imagine it's much, but you wouldn't want it to run out of room!).

When winter sets in (southern hemisphere here), I'll plan a longer outage to sort this properly. I'll look at what you suggested, but if no luck I'm looking at cutting and extending the driveshaft.

Btw, have verified that I can get an 18mm longer shaft in. Moved the fan mounting boss out 18mm to reduce the space available, and could still assemble the back UV

Had a peek, and the 12n series appears to be the standard PTO splines, which are somewhat different. Am I missing something here?

You are right about the standard splines, but it appears as an Ag driveline and there may be a 15 spline yoke not listed in the average driveline charts

I've gone and done the deed. I've added a new note with details and pictures of what we did.
