3-Point Hitch JD 2040 top link

Hello all, newbie here

I've purchased a John Deere 2040 with a 145 loader (not sure of year, maybe 77) and I am needing to buy a top link for it. The trouble is I bought the tractor on a very cold day this winter and hauled it straight down to the property 90 miles away.

I'm home in town and all the info I've seen on the 2040 says its a cat 2/1. WTHeck does that mean. Is it a cat 2 and uses bushings or does it have both size holes on the lift arms. My implements are cat 1 but I need a top link and want to get the correct one.

What you need is a cat 2 top link. It takes a 1" diameter pin , then if you have cat 1 stuff to hook up you just get a reducer bushing.. Bull

I have your 2040's big brother, the 2240. My understanding is that the 2040/2240 was offered as either a Cat1 or Cat2. Mine is the Cat2 version. This link should give you the parts preakdown for the 2040 top link on JDParts: http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.HomePageServlet Put in 2040 where is askes for the model number. Choose your serial number group. Then select "sectional index", followed by "Hydraulics". Then select #44 "3-Point hitch" for earlier ser #'s or #32 "Three-point hitch center link" for later ser #'s. It looks like the earlier ser #'s were Cat1 and the later were Cat2.
