JD 175 Tractor mow but won\'t drive

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and hope to receive from the expert out there. I just obtained an old JD 175 running on a FC420V 14HP Kawasaki engine not too long ago and have a problem that I have no clue where to look for. I was mowing along a heavy bush in the back yard and all of a sudden the tractor stop moving with lots of smoke came out under the engine. I quickly put it in low gear and inspected to see what was going on. From the smoke, it smelled like some type of rubber is burning, and with the low gear the smoke all clear up. Now, I can get the engine started, but it does not move forward or backward with its hydrostatic shifter. If I put the engine in high gear, the smoke starts to come out with the burning smell of rubber. I inspected the deck and all of its belts and they all seem to run and function fine. I pint point the problem to somewhere from the engine and was thinking some type of belt in there that causing this problem due to the fume that I smell. Does this sound like a transmission problem? Could someone give me a head up where to look for and hopefully get this JD working for me again?

It sounds like the traction drive belt (from the engine to the hydrostat) is the culprit. There are a couple of idlers on the traction drive belt and the bearing is probably gone on one or more causing the belt to "lock up". That belt is not too fun to install. You will need to remove the deck and fender deck to gain access to the belt. Be sure and check the hydrostat cooling fan (white plastic fan). If any blades are missing, be sure to replace the fan. If the fan needs to be replaced, that can be another job. We have been successful installing the new fan by cutting the new fan in half across the axis (between the bolt holes) and installing the fan half at a time. I broke the belt on a 175. Good luck on replacing it. If the belt breaks, you can go to JDPARTS.COM and get a diagram. You can also order the parts online, if you register.
