LD,
I think you did all right with that disc, I had an 8' 3ph model (JD 100 series level action) bought in 1973 with 20" pans. Did a nice job behind my 3020 diesel. Used it to work over 180 acres of pasture without issues and the results were much better leveling than our prior disc. I would have liked the larger pull type 110 that you have just could not afford it at the time.

That 3020 probably could have handled ALOT larger disc for sure.

ITs funny, I was reading through the manual, and it references in there that these 210 discs were made for the 2630, 4030, and 4230 tractors. All of them a good bit more tractor than my MX.

But in fairness......the setup I have is the easiest to pull setup. Being 9" spacing and 18" pans. 8 per gang.....gives a total of only 32 pans. They made these discs with up to 22" pans, and on 7.5" spacing on a 14' version....dont really think I'd move that.

On the hydraulic cylinder is it equipped with the hydraulic depth stop? Do you have a close up picture of the cylinder?

Just from my faded memory most 210 discs with 9" blade spacing had larger blades. Figure that disc has gone through a few sets of them. I would think that this disc has been pieced together a bit and has some extra steel added. For $500 and a little work it should be a good set up for your tractor.

I would like to have a good pull type disc but they are too difficult to transport for my work. Tillers are much more compact and I will have to stick with them.

Nice implement. Where I'm at - any type disk is most likely to be half the size of my 80 acres. Gave up looking for used implements, of my size, years & years ago.

Anyhow - Rocks, you want rocks. Well, my entire 80 acres sits on rock. Basaltic lava - with varying soil depth over it. I've got one spot about 1/4 the size of a football field where there is NO SOIL over the rock. Fortunately, the remaining land has from 6" to about 10' over the basaltic lava.

There is an old abandon homestead adjoining my property on the NW where the farmers sons spent untold hours collecting rock from a 80 acre field. They built a low half mile long rock wall with their collection. The word is that this was done around 1905, so I would guess it was with draft animals and a rock sled.

I never complain about the shallow soil depth etc - I've got my fabulous little lake, just off my front porch.

The local joke - I have to watch carefully, those who would come with a pickup - they could take all my soil with one load.

I can get a close up this afternoon, but the depth stop is seized up. It looks like there were special collars to fit over the rod, and when lowering the disc (retracting the rod) they pushed on a little valve on the cylinder. The collar thats on there is all mangled up, and I tried actuating the depth stop rod/valve on the cylinder and its seized.

I am sure its gone through a few sets of pans in its day. I keep meaning to ask the farmer if he has changed any of them. Because the front gang discs all measure ~18", but the back ones all measure ~16.5". So I am guessing they are just a pretty worn out set of 18's, and perhaps he has replaced the fronts recently?? The book dont mention anything about all the factory combos, just that it could be had with 18", 20" or 22" blades, that could be conical, notched, or cone type. And could be 7.5" or 9" spacing. And could be had in 2 different sizes. Basically an 11.5" (which is 9" spacing and 8 blades) or 7.5" spacing 9 blades. OR a ~13' size that added a blade per gang.

Given 2 widths, 3 possible blade diameters, 3 possible types of blades, and 2 spacing options......I guess one could configure this disc about 36 different ways. Then throw in ridgid scrapers vs spring-loaded......I am betting back in the day this disc could have been ordered however you wanted it.

Transport is an issue for me too. Wont be able to take this disc on the trailer to do work for hire, same as my backhoe. Gotta keep it close to home. But aside from discing the garden spot, I bought this disc to be a complement to my backhoe work. After digging a hundred foot + to install tile, once its backfilled and settles, I can take this over it to finish the job off nicely. Will also work well to re-establish waterways that have been farmed out. Disc it up, sow some seed, cultipack, done.

Thats not all bad is it? No need to mow, dont have to worry about getting stuck, wont rut it up when its too wet.

The lack of rocks around here is due to most of the ground being farmed for the last hundred years, and rocks being relocated to piles or fence lines. Sure, every year if the farmer decides to rip or chisel the field, a few more crop up. But the average field size around here is probably ~30 acres. And each field usually has an accompanying rock pile that would probably equate to a full sized dump truck load.

But in general, the top 8" to foot of soil, dont have many rocks due to the farming mentioned. But when digging with the hoe, its not uncommon to unearth some pretty good sized stones. And drive along the edge of the fence lines, and you also see some good sized ones that were just pushed out of the field. I have started collecting some of the bigger ones. I have a line of them that I am making a boarder with down at the shop, probably ~20 rocks. And all of them probably ~1500-2000 pounds.....bout 3 footers.

So yea, while we arent sitting on a few inches of soil then bedrock.....we do have quite a bit of rocks.

If you need adjustable depth control on the cylinder go to your local Farm Supply store and get some clamp on stops. They clamp over the rod. You stack them to get whatever depth you want. You can buy them of varying thickness. I keep a handful in my toolbox.

Here's an example from Tractor Supply.

SpeeCo Stroke Control, 1-1/8 in. to 1-1/2 in. - For Life Out Here

I have got plenty of 2-piece split lock collars which is normally what I use. Just stack them up to get desired control.

Yep, wanted to make sure you knew about them.

I use a JD cylinder on my disc that has the built-in adjustable stopper. It works great and I love it. Don't hafta keep track of those collars. :)
