Anyone here with enough knowledge of the JD110TLB to comment on how this unit compares with the L39 and the L48?

From talking to my dealer who sells Deere's and Kubota, and a few of their customers who own thes machines this is what I gather. The dealer sells quite a few Kubota L39's L48 and JD 110's so they don't seem to favor one over the other without good reason.
All the Back hoes are the same essentially except the L48 reaches about a foot more. Otherwise, the L48 and the 110 are the match with the L39 being the lightweight. The L48 is the strongest motor and may just slightly out lift the 110 loader, but regardless of what the specs say on paper, the Deere loader is stronger than the L39.

Put it this way, my L-39 is a great machine, but what do you think would bend first running too hard into a pile of rocks, the 110 or the L39. Needless to say I will not test this out with my L-39.

In New Egland, the 110's cost about $5,000 more than in Deere country. Kubota's are the better value.

There are really quite a few differences.
Spec wise the L39 and 110 are on par with each other. The biggest difference is the transmission. The 39's GST is more efficient and will put more power to the ground, but its not quite as easy to drive. The 39 and 48 both have three hydraulic pumps, the 110 has two. Two pumps drive the backhoe so when you do things like swing and dump (which you do over and over again) the hoe does not slow down because your doing multiple functions. Visibility wise the L39 is the best of the bunch, the 48 would be the worst. All of them can be pulled with a 3/4 ton truck. Spec wise the 48 is about 10-15% more capeable, has more engine power and a hydrostatic tranny. Price wise its about 4k more than the L39. As for reliability, search the forums here and see what you find.

I know that folks with the Deere love the ability to control forward and reverse movement right from the hoe seat position. It also seems setup right from the factory to take optional loader bucket hydraulic equipment. I would have purchased the JD 110 after my L48 except like the L48 and now the L39, I needed the loader to come off to have the versatility I need.

Kubota also does this. The 48 takes an extra valve, the 39 and 110 use an electronic diverter and switch. The package can be factory or dealer installed.

I didn't think the Deere 110 felt as powerful as my L-39, despite the 110's Yanmar diesel being a few more HP. That's b/c the L-39 is GST.

The biggest difference to me is weight & price, the Deere weighs ~900 pounds more and costs ~$5,000 more. The L-39 has a little more FEL lifting capacity and better ergonomics out front. Couple that with Kubota's 0% financing and the choice was easy for me. The local Deere dealer had a "take it or leave it" attitude like they had no competition and it turned me off.

You'll probably need over a 10K trailer for the 110, since it weighs ~8,000lbs and the trailer for it will weigh ~2,500lbs. I pulled a 110 on my 18' Brimar 10K (3,200 empty) trailer across the scales and it was 11,200lbs /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif The L-39 gives you an outside shot to stay below 10,000lbs if you buy a light enough 10K trailer. Many trailer hitches & 3/4 ton trucks are not set up to tow over 10K off a bobtail set-up without buying a new hitch or heavier truck. Also, some states won't allow you to tow over 10K without a CDL.

I like that Kubota makes a great deal of the machine in-house whereas Deere has a Yanmar diesel and parts imported from other distributors.

Not knocking the 110, It's a great machine and I'd be proud to own one, too. I almost did.

Okay here's the real deal. I went to my JD dealer today and drove a 110. After I test drove it in the field next door and looked it over, the sales person asked me what I thought. I asked her if she wanted the truth or if she wanted me to sugar coat it. She said the truth. I told her it was a "Piece of **** compared to my L39." She said, I know, Kubota is #1 in small tractors."

I could not believe anyone would think the 110 would compare or be better than the L39 or L48. The whole drivers area is plastic. The fuel tank is where the 39's dash is and is made out of plastic. The power steering ram and hoses are exposed and would be easy to damage in my type of work. The sales person told me how quite the engine would be when I first started it. Heck the 110's engine is twice as noisey as my 39's! I don't know, but unless you are totaly blinded by brand loyalty, I don't know how anyone could choose a 110 over an L39 or L48.

As far as being stronger than a L39 or L48, I don't think so. Maybe weighs more, but heavier or better made, no way. So Builder and Rat, and all other L39 and L48 owners, be glad you bought what you did!!

Then she handed me the key to a new 210LE, my dream tractor. Turbo charged, limited slip front axle and dual tilt cylinders. I drove it to the field and played for about fifteen minutes. Wow. Better than sex! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Did you crawl under the JD 110 and look at the hydraulic lines all saying "break me, break me". They do make a under body armour kit and I would suggest it be purchased. My local JD/Kubota dealer carried the tractors side by side and did not necessarily bad mouth the JD 110, mentioning it had some nice features but did say they have been having issues with the JD's hydrostatic drive. I am convinced that no one makes a better compact diesel and no one makes a better hydrostatic drive then Kubota.

Oh yea, the rip me off please hydraulic lines. What a bonus! I especially liked the sloppy FEL control handle. What a "Quality" item that is! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I could live with the plastic hood, but come on, the whole driver's deck!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif It appears JD rushed to get the 110 out and Kubota took their time and perfected it. I'm not sure which came first.

My experience with the 110 came in the form of renting a 110 for 2 weeks (2 seperate weeks in the same year). I put at least 50-75 hours on two different 110's.

Both rentals were low hours. I liked the machine overall, but during one of the rental weeks, the machine broke down and had to be returned for repair. From what i remember, the 110 had a heavier feel to it, but felt less refined.

One thing we need to remember is that the 110 was the originator, and Kubota copied their design, so it makes senses that they should be able to refine & improve the 110's design.

Muleskinner,

I know you're die hard L-39 like me, but I have found a couple minor gripes with my L-39. One is that the fender mounted "intelli-panel" could easily get trashed by falling debris, a low hanging branch, etc. I'm constantly concerned about it. The other "complaint" might be retracted at a later date, but I'm not big on the plastic canopy. Maybe I'll learn to l;ike it b/c it won't fade & rust like my L-35 canopy started to do, but it seems cheaper and less protective.

One other thing: The L-39's bucket hydraulic lines were out in the field of danger, too. My Kubota dealer did install an updated armor kit on them for no charge, and now they're fine.
