Over the years my starter has occasionally responded with just a click. My rebuilder attributed this to low voltage, so I installed a relay. The problem just recurred, and I discovered that with key turned to start, there is no juice to the relay. Assuming a switch problem I subsequently determined that with the key turned to start there is power to the start connection on the switch, but none to the relay. This tells me that the fault is in the wiring. The JD wiring diagram shows a starter over-ride switch in line. What is a starter over-ride switch, and where would I find it? I would like to avoid unwrapping the wiring harness just to trace wires. ALSO, the wiring diagram shows a black & white wire from the starter switch to the starter, BUT, on the starter switch there are TWO black/white wires connected to the same terminal. One is ~12 ga, and is the one to the relay, but the other is ~16-18 ga, and does not appear on the diagram. What is its purpose?

I don’t know the answer to your questions but the click seems common on the 50 series. My 950 does it. I have not committed to figuring it out yet.

The repairs and correction wouldn't be such a chore, but the problem occurs at the most inconvenient times and location. Another example of the designers not having to live with results of their decisions.

Check the battery post and then the ground connection. My JD 4400 did something similar. I cleaned the ground on the neg cable and replace the post terminals and it solved the issue.

sounds like you're looking at the low serial number 850 & 950 diagram, my 1050 diagram doesn't show a "starter bypass"
mine shows one black/white wire to the neutral switch then to starter, and the other going to the "temp lamp test relay"
