Japanese Maple -- Leaf Curling

We transplanted a small volunteer Japanese Maple this spring -- about three feet tall. It seems perky and productive but about half of the new leaves curl after they open. We don't see any signs of insects or disease. Anyone have an idea of the cause of this?
