Oil & Fuel J.D. 5105 Hydralic Oil Sight Glass

Anyone have any advice or tricks to accurately read the hyd. oil sight glasses on J.D. 5105 (2wd). Manual instructions seem simple enough but the small photos in the manual are difficult to see and actually eyeballing the sight glasses seem almost impossible to interpret what they might actually be indicating. Just want to know how to accurately read these sight levels to insure the correct amount of fluid is in the tractor. Any help or advice appreciated.

The trouble I have with my similar sightglass (F935) is the glass itself gets a brown/tan color to it. I change the clear portion frequently to better see it. I also lengthend the hose a bit so I can shift it up and down to find the oil level.

I believe there are marks for high and low that show the range too. I typically just keep mine about middle of the upper sight glass.

That's exactly the trouble I'm having. I learned today the sight glasses do turn a brownish gray color. I understand this might be caused by the hydralic fluid itself, some of which is a tannish color. I took a dipstick check today and see that I do in fact have more than enough hydralic oil in the machine (it's above the top glass) and don't think this will hurt anything. If the oil does indeed color or coat the sight glasses which makes them unusuable, I'm wondering why J.D. didn't come up with a better way to check this (such as a trusty dipstick). Look at the site glasses next time you change the hyd/trans fluid. It is very easy to read when the fluid goes down, even with the dingy site glass. A flashlight helps also but shouldn't be necessary.
