I think what you're seeing is surges of material that's been stuck in California reaching the distribution points in surges. Costco and SAMS are having issues with this because their warehouses are their distribution centers so they don't have enough storage space for some items.

The Wall Street Journal report on the issue has the excess inventory down to misjudging product demand and having orders arriving late, causing a build up of inventory in some product areas like laptops, patio furniture and home decor. If I bought any items in those categories, I am not likely to be buying more anytime soon. The companies want to sell of the products which have high inventory levels and that are not selling, so they can buy more products that are selling. They just misjudged demand for some products and did not anticipate the pandemic caused delays to production and shipping but who could.

Russia supplies around half of the diesel used in Europe. While Europeans countries have not completely stopped buying Russian energy, they have reduced their purchases and that fuel has to come from somewhere. One can't just start pumping oil, transporting it, refining it and transporting it again, overnight. Energy prices were going up before Putin's War due to government policies in the US and Europe. Putin's War just pushed the prices up higher where it will stay until the war is ended and/or energy policies in the US and Europe change.

Government energy policies are going to change,

1. When people are starving in some areas of the world this fall and next year
2. There are severe civil disruptions in some countries due to lack of fuel, food, and prices there of
3. Electrical prices in the US start to increase to catch up with European prices
4. Gas and diesel prices increase and stay at historical high levels
5. Black outs occur, especially in heat waves and deep freezes
6. People start having to decide to buy food or suffer in the heat or cold because of high energy prices
7. High energy costs drag down economies
8. People start to die in power outages and/or because they cannot afford to heat or cool their living space.
9. Food costs stay high due to the cost of diesel and fertilizer price increases due to demand for natural gas which is at high levels due to government policies.

items 2, 3, 6 and 7 are already happening or starting too.

There are a lot of reasons I might go with before just starting out with 'global conspiracy'.

Maybe they had trouble predicting their supply chain recovery?
Maybe there was prior uncertainty about the availability of these items?
Maybe they were trying to hedge inflationary increases by ordering more product at today's prices?
Maybe they're just bad at their jobs?

Beyond that it's just capitalism and AFAIK that's not against the law. Yet.

Here is an article about the same thing. Notice anything different? It's not that they have been sitting on inventory, they are sitting on a lot of inventory no-one is buying. Just a slight difference.

I love a good conspiracy theory as much as any one, I just have doubts about any group of people being able to pull one off, or stay quiet about it if they do

I think this is the first time I can remember just in time manufacturing being tested this hard. We have found a lot of flaws and dependencies that I think we were largely unaware of. Will we learn/fix anything??
