Got an envelope in the mail the other day informing me that I've been preselected to field test hunting gear for the North American Hunting Club. I get these things every couple of years and I always just trash 'em, but I got to wondering if anyone else here has taken them up on their offer and if so, what's the deal? Is it worth $12 a year and you get to keep any of the gear they send you to try out? I haven't responded and I didn't throw it away yet but I figure, if nothing else I got a nice buck window sticker and some return address labels with wildlife scenes on them...

Throw it out! While it’s true some people do get chosen test out decent gear, it sure isn’t many. The magazine isn’t bad for $12/year, and I would sign up again EXCEPT FOR: the endless stream of books and videos that they send you without asking, and the bills that follow. No matter if you send the junk back or not, you will constantly get bills and phone calls. By law, you can keep any unsolicited things they send you (I’ve been told), but it’s not worth the headache. It took years for me to get off their list.

Try it if you want, it's my guess that you will regret it.

I am a life member and have got lots of field test items, I have never got the big things yet mostly knifes calls bug spray camo paint and such. It is true that they will try and send you things but the way to stop that is simply write 'RETURN TO SENDER' on the unopened package. Once i started doing that instead of just sending it back at my expense all those stopped and I have not got any for over ten years. I still get the magazine and field test items. I like the magazine because I love to hunt if you do not want to hunt it would not be worth it. They call it a club but really it is a for profit company. They also have the North American Fisherman and the handy Man "clubs'. Joining is only worth it if you like to read hunting stories and they do have a chat room that you can go to and do real time chats with other members. They have contests monthly for gear give aways. It only takes one decent field test to pay for a years subscription.

I agree with "throw it out" joined twice, both times "selected". What you are "selected" for is marketing. If you do it, make sure and sign up at RCA for some CD's too, might as well do the whole whammy.

Nobody here seems to have mentioned the North American Gardening Club which HAS to be the biggest bargain of the lot. Let me assure you guys that the free packets of seeds they send you along with the initial offer to join have to be worth the $12 membership fee alone!!

Speaking of "Being Selected"......I received a letter in the mail a couple of weeks ago stating that I was the lucky recipient of a FREE burial plot in a local cemetary ($750 value). It stated that I had 10 business days to claim my prize......didn't quite know their meaning of the word claim? Needless to say...that letter went in the trash. :confused2:

AMAZING...I got a letter in yesterday's mail telling me, quote:

"Congratulations, you have been selected to receive* an 8 day, 7 night Cruise for 2 with an outside cabin, leaving from any major port in the US. You have also been selected to receive* as a bonus, 2 round trip airfares leaving or going to any major airport in the continental US...."

Can I interpret this as meaning we get a free cruise and airfare for nothing?

In fine print the * says "This offer is being used in conjunction with a vacation club promotion, and there is no obligation to purchase or join anything..."

I know a guy who used to be an executive officer with NHC. By the way he had a 6-figure salary. I asked him about those books and other things they send out and then bill you. He said they were taking a chance that the people actually send them back or pay for them as there was nothing they could do if you didn't pay for them. Of course that was AFTER I paid for 4 books!

So I guess it's up to you. I would imagine they'll stop sending you free stuff after they figure out you ain't paying for it.

They also have the North American Fisherman...

Now that you mention it, I was a member of their Fishing Club years ago. I don't ever remember getting any new gear to try out. That's probably how I got on the Hunting Club list...

I was "selected" twice in the past as well -- I had to move to get off the list
The magazine is not that good (more advertising than useful articles)and the rest of thec stuff is a PITA. The "field trial stuff seemed to be like watching a lottery draw -- but I felt like I never had a ticket :p. How many cheap multi tools can you use? -- JMHO

that is similar to what I did with the return to sender as long as I paid the return they kept sending but as soon as they had to pay they stopped and that was over ten years ago. I still get the field test things so they did not hold a grudge.
