It's a Christmas Tree!

MADISON (WKOW) -- Gov. Scott Walker is calling the 30-foot tall tree decorated in Wisconsin's Capitol Rotunda a Christmas tree, not a holiday tree.

It was called a Christmas tree when it was first displayed in 1916, but it got a more generic name in 1985 after some found it offensive.

The Madison-based Freedom from Religion Foundation says the government is endorsing Christianity by calling it a Christmas tree instead of a holiday tree.

The tree is on display from late November until early January.

Good for him!! To me it's a matter of history rather than a matter of religion. No one calls the Easter bunny a "holiday bunny". San Francisco and San Diego still bear the Spanish word for saint.

The reason decorated evergreen trees (or in today's world plastic replicas of evergreen trees) are popular in December is because of the historical association with the celebration of Christmas. Therefore it is a Christmas Tree. A Menorah is put up to celebrate Hanukkah, but no one goes around saying we should call it the "non-denominational holiday candlestick".

Here's my take on the whole politically correct holiday fiasco: If I'm Christian I wish you a Merry Christmas. If you're Jewish you wish me back a Happy Hanukkah. If you don't believe in either you can come back with whatever expression you find appropriate. Or, you can simply say, "Thank you," and go on with your day.

Taking bets on how long it takes to lock this thread.

Good for you, Mr. Walker, sir! Too much political correctness here in Canada, too. It will be interesting to watch the way our public school in town handles Christmas issues this year. My grandchildren go there so it's close to my heart.

My Dad was a missionary in Finland before us kids came a long. He brought home a reindeer hide, and he always teased us kids that it was from one of Santa's reindeer.
