Ditto. BTW, is the machine trashed? If not, what's the ticket for that kind of damage?

Gee, I can't understand why that retaining wall sudenly let out like that but it must have been quite a surprise for the operator  I guess it could have happened overnight. Imagine coming back to that

I don't think they could have driven it out as the engine must have been flooded. I think it must have been dragged out somehow.

Not something I would want to explain the DER if they came calling after the police were called to cover the police report that the insurance company is probably going to require filled out. However, it could have happened elsewhere in the world, but somebody definitely isn't going to be happy.
I agree that it was probably driven out,as it doesn't look that stuck. Amazing just what these machines can do and in what instances.I wonder if it was a homeowner renting it, but who knows for sure. It appears someone wanted to dig out the channel, but what did they have in mind to do with the mud? Reach of the unit isn't long enough to do it from the upper level, and back fill against the wall, and I don't see any of the fence taken down, but in the last picture they did have some of the dirt piled over the grass on the same side of the fence. Guess they moved some dirt with it after getting it out.

if you look close at the second pic you will see a couple ties stacked up aginst the fence, i wonder if he was trying to get down there in the first place? i watched a guy in amazement for hours operate one of those things on the side of a creek bank, the cab was moving dirt every time he would swing from side to side. he was burried up to the cab in on the side of a creek bank, every once in awhile he would "walk" the thing around to get out of the mud and dirt. when he was done he stuck the dipper stick way up the hill and walked right out like it was just another day at the office.

I want his job

If the motor was shut down immediately, it should be a good power washing, and change of fluids and filters. I put a 4x4 pickup in water lapping over the hood. Shut it down as soon as I realized what happened(unseen hole while fording), and then was pulled out. I towed it a short distance home, changed fluids and filters(there was water in the engine). Everything was fine afterwards. Drove that truck a lot for a couple more years before getting a new one.
