The tractor that is...

Hello Gang,
I need some of the knowledge from members with some (knowledge that is /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
Experience would be a plus also. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now let's get serious. I just purchsed a Gannon FD 100 rollover box blade from an old friend. He had told me it was a 5 footer. When I got to his place turns out it is 5 & half feet (66 inches). He felt my little B 2190 could handle it so we loaded it up and I brought it home. Just hooked it up and B 2910 does pull it in 4WD M range with the blade working. However when the "teeth" are used it can't cut the mustard; small pine roots stop tractor in it tracks. I have e-mailed Woods to see if they can give me the weight. (I'm guessing at least 800-900 lbs.)

Should I sell this and find a smaller rollover for my use?

Thanks in advance for all opinions and suggestions.

Did you try using this boxblade in low?

Thanks for the reply.
Yes I tried in Low.
I just mentioned M range to let you know that I could move some dirt in M range. Low would still make the tires spin when the going got too tough.

Re: It ain\'t broke YET

Sorry to hear that it wont pull it. From what i hear the Gannons are very heavy. Perhaps your friend will give you a refund. I use a 72in boxblade but it only weighs 550lbs . Its a King Kutter but for a 30hp tractor its all ive ever needed.I can run in medium but when i get the rippers down in wet clay i stay in low. They carry these at tractor supply if you have one close, they are very reasonably priced... Good luck

However when the "teeth" are used it can't cut the mustard; small pine roots stop tractor in it tracks.

I think this may be a hard call...

I have a 5' KK box blade. I put several 12" concrete blocks on it to give it more weight so it cuts better. My tractor is also a B2910.

If I catch a root with my scarifiers, my tractor may stop pulling too. Depends on the root. The root either breaks or the tractor stops. When I say stops, I mean looses traction. Wheels spin but forward motion stops.

Sounds like you have a nice box blade there, maybe a little large for the B2910, but still maybe quite useful.

I just wonder if you caught the same root with a KK box blade that is much lighter, would the tractor still stop and spin the wheels?

Maybe the problem is tough roots and not the tractor/box blade combination...

Re: It ain\'t broke YET

You have a very desirable implement. Is it this one?
rollover?

Next up, are your tires filled? Do you have a FEL on the tractor? Bucket full of dirt? Wheel weights? Tire chains? Do you use the diff lock? I have a gannon box that is about 950 pounds. When the going gets tough, I fill the FEL bucket with dirt, use 4x4 and stand on the diff lock so both tires with agressive chains pull hard while in low.

If that doesn't work, try taking out a few scarifiers.

I have to admit, I don't use the scarifiers much. Just the first pass or two to break the sod up, then the weight of the box does the rest. Try to adjust the top link to finesse the operation. If you shorten the top link all the way down to minimum length, the back of the box won't hardly touch the ground, just the scarifiers. That might work for you.

Thanks albmn10, I don't want to ask him to take it back. He's retired and has sold his 200+ acres and moving to "town". If I have to I'll just try to re-sell.

Thanks Henro, good to have you back in the saddle. I missed your posts a while back. You are probably right regarding root strength. I've had the same thing happen with middle buster down. Tires slip.

Thanks also to John_Bud, yep that looks like my "monster".
The top of the web site page:

Heavy-Duty Rollover R Series Box Scrapers
Category 1; 30 -60 hp tractors

Then on down the page:
Heavy-Duty SR10-30 Series Box Scrapers
Category 1; 45 -70 hp tractors
Then the chart shows SR-10 65inches 3/8 end plates. That's what mine measures. So I'm guessing the 915 lbs is close to the weight.

Now Henro and John do you still think B 2910 is OK? This is not an implement that will be used very often. I just want to level up some trails and a small parking lot from time to time.

Long live TBN and all the members.

Re: It ain\'t broke YET

Well, my L3410 HST with a box that is the same weight is traction challenged. It has overcome most of it with filled rear tires, aggressive chains, running in 4x4, standing on the diff lock and filling the front bucket with sand. A lot depends on the soil type.

I would think that your tractor being quite a bit lighter would have more of a challenge to overcome. BUT, your tasks are not too overwhelming and with some creative operation technique, it may work out.

Re: It ain\'t broke YET

I pull a 66" 830lb BB with my L2800... with loaded tires and the FEL on it I can bring it to a halt with the tires spinning also.
But it can do tons of work that my previous BBs could only dream of.
I would hang onto what you have and use it wisely... like only using the scarfiers when breaking up the ground and just blade for pulling dirt.
Mine has the hyd scarfiers so it is lots easier for me to switch than the manual ones.

Fill your back tires...it really makes a difference.

Re: It ain\'t broke YET

Thanks again to all.
This is a "rollover" box. I cannot use the scarfiers and blade at the same time.
Three positions, box pull forward, box rolled push backward, or scarfiers down.
I plan to give it a try and be cautious.
Right now I'm in the process of swapping the two (reversable/interchangable) blades.
The pull forward blade is worn bad. (flat cutting both edges )
The push back looks like new. (sharp both edges)
