It’s too hot to mow.

For the folks like myself that are not cutting hay but using a rotary cutter to clean up around the farm: It is way too hot to mow. In the sun, sitting on a diesel tractor, over 50, overweight one is flirting with a heat stroke. We still do it.

My grandson at the wheel in this one, but yes that diesel does get hot on those 85 degree humid days !

The mowing in the heat was one thing, spraying Paraquat in a full Tyvek suit and respirator was another ! That's the closest I've come to passing out from the heat ! Pulling a hundred feet of hose through waist deep weeds in summer heat, guess it was enough to keep me in school !

Mowed this little 10 acre parcel today with my little open station tractor and it was smoking down here in Florida today, customer is trying to sell this parcel and has some potential buyers coming to look, so I had to get it done.

I have a yard, not a lawn. Most of it is white clover and doesn't grow tall. I mowed 5 times last year, probably more this year. I like it,

even when it over grown, it looks ok. One thing I'm sure of is that Better Homes and Gardens isn't coming here and taking pictures.

Yesterday our local tv station reported that we hit 104 which is the highest ever recorded in our community. And they said the heat index was up to 120 at one point yesterday. My thermometer also measured 104 yesterday.

What's causing this heat?

As a kid I remember discing the orchard, 50+ acres, with a Massey 135 pulling a 10' Cockshutt disc which was probably oversized for the little beast.
No cab, AC, ducking branches all day in the heat. Had to put the feet as far out as possible on the foot rest to keep them away from the transmission housing.
At the end of the day the castings were so hot that if you sprinkled water on them they sizzled.
No bottled water, no sunblock, just shorts, sunglasses and a hat. Couple times the glasses and hat got swept away by branches and run over before I could stop.
Now a little heat and the wussies need cabs and AC and radios and cell phones and their MOMMIES.

when the temps are over 100 degrees F and even when its
in the teens with shorts and t-shirt the heat don't bother me

Plowed miles of snow last summer I'm tell'n ya. 10 feet deep in places and that was July 4th.
Kinda hard picking peaches in those conditions.
Believe me, we get enough days in the 80s and 90s and I'm not talking about your wife.
