Just as followup, I did a little experiment. I took the new diesel fuel I bought a couple of days ago, put it in a glass jar and into my freezer, which is at about 0 fahrenheit. I left it all day and it had no gelling at all.
Then I took the diesel I had drained from my tank on the day that my filter gelled up, and did the same thing. Again, it did not gel at all. I was surprised it didn't gel. Someone mentioned that the filter elements have "seeds" that promote the capture of tiny pieces of gel which then grow larger as it filters more.
Is that the difference? Any thoughts on why it didn't gel?

I found that it takes a few days to a week to really show up in a test.

Thanks. I'm just learning more with each post!
I'll try again.

When I had a gelling problem once I threw the filter outside. It warmed up to the fifties and it was still gelled.

I have seen an add on heater you can wrap around a filter to help warm it up, kind of a small blanket setup.
