Is this a horse fly?

At first I thought so....but then realized they are not biting. They are getting caught in webs etc on some windows in my barn. They also are bumping me on and around my head...but they are not biting. I have some old honey comb from a bee tree in the barn, and that is probably drawing them in there, but it's not a bee, doesn't fly like one at all.

It looks a lot like a horse fly but I have never seen a brown one - only grayish-green. Still it has the big head and clear wings like a horse fly.

Deer flies bite, at least they do in Alaska.

Yes....that's what I suddenly occurred to me. The flies are bumping me...but not biting. We got our share of biting flies here, so ones that don't bite are a bit of a puzzle. Maybe I'm so rotten, they just refuse to!

They take a chunk of meat out too.

Looks like a green head fly to me... They bite... At least the females do... Maybe the males are around you, and they're scouting meals for their girl friends.

^^this, greenhead horse fly... they must not have been hungry at the time. I've lost a little blood over those { darn } flies. {insert your own curse word here}
