Just saw this on Craigslist, and I know about the horror stories with CL, but my neighbor is looking for a little tractor to do some light mowing with.

The fuel injector thing scares me a bit, but I'll be the first to tell you I know absolutely nothing about these tractors. Just for comparison a 8n with mower on it is about $2500 around here right now, so the price is right, just don't know enough about them to tell him anything.

"In a heartbeat", assuming it is local and you can start, and operate it. Battery and injector should not keep it from running. Forget about getting parts from JD. It's a Yanmar gray market.

Looks fishy to me ... why would he not fix it and more than double his asking price. If that is all that is wrong with it it is a steal. Careful he does not rob you!

I'd be all over that deal...if it starts and runs, even if it runs poorly it can be fixed for not a lot of $.

The ad didn't list hours. It looks reman'd to me. You might find it shows very low hours with a new meter and its got other major issues they didn't list.

Thanks for all the replies. That's kind of what I was thinking that it was pretty cheap. It is "supposed" to be just down the road a bit in St. Mary's (about 30 minutes) so it might be worth taking a look at just for giggles. Worst that can happen is I'd be out gas money.

Here is his reply:

1004 hours. I worked with some mechanics out of Wichita Falls, Tx over the phone that work on these things and they diagnosed it for me. I'm moving and decided its not worth working on if I don't need it and I can just sell it. It does need a new battery. The battery is wore out. I boost it to start it.

So it sounds like he doesn't really know what's wrong with it. Might be worth just going to take a look.

Anything in particular to look for? Tranny's? Hydraulics? All of my experience with tractors is with vintage stuff. . .

Regardless of what's wrong with it, I doubt that anyone can diagnose a bad injector over the phone without having the owner do some extensive troubleshooting work. Since he says "OBO", offer him $1,000, and you will have about $2,000 to spend on it before approaching it's value.

Yeah, I figure if I can get the neighbor motivated to go take a look it would be worth his time to do it. Figure even if there is something wrong with it he could do better than what the guy is asking as long as it runs and everything works.

Still a little leery. Asked the guy for a phone #, so we'll see what happens.

There is nothing about that tractor that looks like a remanufacterd VN tractor...buy it and fix it. can't see it costing more that 1k to fix.
