I see what you mean, but not HD candidates at all. #1 would be a light duty gear like you said- if it is available. I think that they were replaced with that plastic General Transmission CVT in later models. #2 is MTD's CVT w/ the 2 traction belts. Hi old White could be a the same type (though likely more robust) or gear.

The old White is hydrostatic.

What do people think of the Husqvarna YT42DXLS or TS 242XD ? They seem to be the best they make with a 42" deck.

They're OK. If deck housing strength is what is needed, you have that. The rest of the unit is pretty standard Husqvarna, which isn't a bad ride.

Hi quicksand, I'm a little late to this thread but I would classify my 42in Kubota Z turn a premium mower. I have a hundred hrs + on it. Love it... wouldn't go back to a lawn tractor style. Cuts long grass, heavy mowing deck, super maneuverable. If you don't have steep hills and not more than a few acres to mow, you might want to look into Z100 or the new Z200. I have the Z122RKW-42. Not sure what the difference is going with the newer Z200 series. Price seems about the same on the Kubota website where you build your own.

My personal choice for a "premium" mower is one of the older IH Cub Cadets, shaft driven so no belts to the hydro drive to burn or stretch, can be found with 44 or 50inch decks and most had the super durable and easily rebuildable(over and over again as needed) Kohler K series single cylinder cast iron engines. I have a 1450. That 14hp single has more grunt and can do more than some of the 26hp Lawn Tractors sold today for over 2500 dollers. I can run a rear rototiller, pull a single bottom moldboard plow, disc harrow, rock rake, box blade ect with the optional rear sleeve hitch. My lift is a hyd lift, but not all models have that. The single cylinder engine is cheaper to overhaul and easy on gas usage. You can find a really nice Cub for 500-1500 dollers depending on options included and overall condition. Another good model, but with an expensive engine to overhaul is the venrable John Deere 318. Onan 18hp twin cylinder engine, hydro lift, power steering even. Mike

I'm looking for a tough, durable lawn / garden tractor for mowing at our farm. We usually bag lawn clippings and sometime chop up leaves for garden mulch. I already have a 1986 Kubota G6200 with a bagger that's our main lawn mower, and a I'm looking for something smaller to mow tight, hilly areas mostly near the house and around fruit trees, with occasional duty mowing weeds & grass a foot tall or so. We might pull a small 2-wheel cart, but don't need this machine to till, plow snow etc.

It would replace a mid-90s John Deere GT275 that needs a lot of work I'm not prepared to do. I'd prefer to find a solid, well-maintained or restored used bargain but might buy new. My budget is as far under $5,000 as I can go, and still get a good machine that will last.

Must-have features:
- Maneuverable, compact and fairly light weight - but not a flimsy 'box store special'
- High quality hydrostatic transmission that can be easily serviced. Too many stories about disposable TuffTorq K45s and the like that are expensive to replace.
- Foot controlled hydrostatic
- 38" - 48" deck that will bag dry grass without a blower. I want to be able to take the chute off and free-blow occasionally. The deck should be fairly rugged but doesn't have to be bulletproof.
- Belt drives should be simple, easy to service and not go through belts too fast.

Preferred features:
- Single cylinder gasoline engine; easier to fix or rebuild
- 38" - 42" two blade deck; simpler & smaller
- Shaft drive to deck (I know, this is asking a lot)
- Suspension seat for comfort

I've been watching eBay and Craigslist and have seen a few possibilities; older Cub Cadet, Deere, Toro/Wheelhorse & Simplicity garden tractors from around 1995- 2005. This lines up with what a couple of others posted earlier.

New models I'm thinking of include the Kubota T2080 / T2090 or John Deere X300 series. Mixed thoughts on new Simplicity and Husqvarna models. There are so many models and price points for new garden/yard tractors, that it feels more complicated than looking for a car or truck!
